Strive to be always prepared for death, for death is near to both the elderly and the young, to monks and laymen equally; and often it comes suddenly and unexpectedly. Let everyone consider what will happen with his soul.
– St. Barsanuphius of Optina
We tend to think in terms of odds – What are the odds that I will die today? Or tomorrow? But in reality life versus death each day is a binary option. The fact that God has chosen to give me life today does not in any way impact whether or not God will give me life tomorrow. In the end, there will come a tomorrow that will never be for me.
