We find this same sentiment with the Desert Fathers and many of the Orthodox Fathers as well. We do need others. We do need the Body of Christ. Yet the noise around us is deafening. We are bombarded with everyone’s view, everyone’s opinion until we no longer even know what we think. Who we are. We become parrots of the words of others.

“Shut them out!” is the word from Nouwen. We will not be transformed into the image of Christ through our televisions. Our Souls need to rest. To sit in the darkness and ponder. To meditate. To pray.
