All must suffer; the lesson of Christianity is what can be done with suffering, when it is met with self-oblivious courage and love.

Evelyn Underhill, Concerning the Inner Life

I held a belief that somehow God would ease suffering. That God rides in like a Knight in shining armor to save us at the last second. Swooping down to catch us before hitting the ground. Then I read Foxe’s Book of Martyrs and I found that I believed a lie. God didn’t swoop down to save the ones who were torn apart. He didn’t pull the ones to safety who were cut open and stuffed with grain to be eaten by pigs. He didn’t save them from pain and death at all.

He redeemed them through pain. And He gave them eternal peace.
