We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.
We are mistaken when we think that a definitive belief in the very special place of Mary came somewhere in the Middle Ages. We find beautiful prayers to Mary from St. Augustine.
Protestants, Catholics and Orthodox alike can recognize that Mary was picked by God for a task which no other was chosen. She was given a choice, a free choice, and even as a young girl she chose a path that we would scorn.
Her choice: a peaceful life like all others through denial of God or the life of a slandered, outcast whore through obedience to God’s call. A child…she chose her own destruction at the request of God.
Why is she blessed? Why is she holy? Because she chose what none of us would. She chose God over herself. Without hesitation.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.
I am an absolute sinner.
