The depth of silence

We are deceived when we think that we communicate with each other through the word. If there is no depth of silence between us, words convey almost nothing. Understanding takes place at a level where two people meet deeply in silence, outside of any verbal expression. – Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh

I thought I knew a friend until I hurt her. And in the pain that I had caused I had to look into her eyes in silence. To see the tears that welled up. The slight quivering.

A soul hurt. And afraid.

And I saw myself. In her eyes. My soul reflected in the beauty and pain of another. Captured in silence.

At that moment. I knew her.
